For people living in the US, how much do you regularly tip your server? This was inspired by the Uber tip thread
I tip the minimum I can get away with. Typically around 10-12%
And guaranteed spit in the food next time you eat there.
Why guaranteed? I barely got twice to the same place anyways
The standard is 15% despite servers relentlessly trying to socially engineer it higher.
20% or you’re a deadbeat
Found the waitperson.
I always tip 20, even if the service is poor. I figure sometimes poor service happens because someone is having a rough day, so a good tip might be what they need. There are exceptions of course. Sometimes I tip more and sometimes less, but 20 is the norm.
What I resent most about the tipping culture is the assumption by tip-ees that their customers are richer than they are and are just being stingy. It feels exploitative and wrong when I'm tipping a waiter that earns more per hour than I do. When I'm much richer, I gladly tip - I went to mainland China and felt guilty about not being able to tip much even though I made more than most people. But in the US, where my $16 or so per hour isn't -that- high? It's a little different.
Well it sounds like you can’t afford to eat out then. If you can’t afford to pay a server 20% tip then don’t go out to eat, that way they can serve someone else that can afford to tip them properly. You regularly pay people “who earn more per hour” directly or indirectly so your whole logic is flawed and reductive of servers.
I love restaurant food, but waiter service has no value to me, particularly if I have to pay a person more than I earn just to carry the food from the kitchen to my seat. I'll gladly walk over to the kitchen and pick the plate up myself, but that isn't generally an option. Maybe we could make waiter service optional and people who can shrug off paying 15%+ for it can do so while the plebeians who are there to eat more than they're there to be served can pick up their food and take it back to their tables.
Tipping for service shouldn’t be based on the value of the food. I tip in increments of $5 up to a max of $30, which would be for me + 1, bottle of wine, and great service (never an empty water glass). Deductions based on whatever I interpret as lacking.
